Despite my years of experience in buying and recommending gifts, let me be the first to admit that it is difficult sometimes to find just the right gift for my mother, especially for Mother's Day.
While every holiday or special occasion is important to different people, for different ways and reasons, Mother's Day is really special to me and to most of us. This is the day that celebrates the woman who gave birth to you, - she gave you life, and on Mother's Day we all feel the need to show how much our mothers are loved and appreciated.
The problem with trying to find just the right gift is often because our mothers already seem to have everything they need. From a well-equipped kitchen to a well-equipped sewing room, what can you possibly bring to her that she will really love, - what special gift can you give her to show her your love and appreciation for all the things she has done for you?
Time to Think Outside the Box
What about replacing some of those things that she already has with newer models?
Remember, it is very likely that a great deal of her kitchen equipment came into her possession as wedding or wedding shower gifts.
Does she have one of those manual pasta makers? Consider replacing it with one of the new, electric models. There are a number of good-quality ones on the market that can turn out three pounds of pasta in less than twenty minutes.
Does she make her own bread, or has she ever said she would like to try it? What about a bread machine? There is something wonderful about the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the house that makes everyone feel good, and the bread machine removes the hardest and trickiest part of making your own bread or buns, - the kneading of the dough.
As we grow older, we (women in particular) often lack calcium, which makes our bones brittle. While I know that calcium supplements can be helpful, why not consider giving her something that would encourage her to take in more calcium in a natural and enjoyable way, - like an ice cream maker?
These wonderful appliances can make ice cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet in as little as 25 minutes, and the results are so tasty that you will not have to worry that your mother's intake of calcium is too low. As an added plus, your children will have even more reason to want to visit Grandma.
Depending upon how self-sufficient your mother likes to be, maybe she would really appreciate a food grinder that would allow her to grind small quantities of grain for her own use.
While neither I nor my mother personally grow our own grain, we have often gone to Natural Food stores and bought small bags of specialty-type grains, the kind you cannot find in your regular supermarket. You can buy them at a reasonable price, but you have to grind it yourself. It is very healthy, and the taste of these grains, when added to something as simple as a coffee cake, is mouth-watering.
